NOTE: Powell’s son is in McCain’s camp.
According to ABC’s Good Morning America, many times this past summer. They call it follow up. Obama and John McCain both met with Powell earlier this year. Powell stated that he would watch the campaigns to see how they were run.
Then came Powell. “[T]o send that kind of a message, I think would be electrifying,” he said, FLASHBACK: Powell Told students an African-American president would be ‘electrifying’…
So why the big deal?
Powell did not achieve what achieved by challenging Presidents and senior commanders on matters of principle. Nope. He followed the parade, another way of saying going along with the crowd.
Can this endorsement be anything but about race?
Because many Americans suspect Powell endorsed Obama primarily because of a shared ethnic identity, the move raises fears that his candidacy really is about division, rather than unity.
Or gimme mentality? Colin Powell will have a role as a top presidential adviser in an Obama administration, the Democratic White House hopeful said Monday.
Not a big surprise that he was endorsing Obama. Yes, it is about race. It has been about race since the beginning. Obama has NO experience. He is not running against Palin, so the issue of experience should still be an issue. But then again, if you are considering the Supreme Court,
As a key reason, Powell said: “I would have difficulty with two more conservative appointments to the Supreme Court, but that’s what we’d be looking at in a McCain administration.”
or,
One prominent conservative who knows both McCain and Powell said that for all the secretary of state’s criticism of McCain and his praise of Obama, the move had less to do with the two candidates for president than the current occupant of the Oval Office.
“Powell cares a lot about his reputation with Washington elites, and he thinks he was badly damaged by his relationship with the Bush administration,” said this Republican. ”So this is a way to make up for what he regarded as not being treated well by the Bush administration, not being given the due deference he thinks he deserves.”
I suppose there was not enough arse kissing from the McCain campaign. SNARK
“It’s my understanding Colin Powell gave his word to John McCain that he would not make an endorsement in this election. Powell stabbed McCain in the back. This is the same Powell who kept silent for two years while Scooter Libby was falsely accused of leaking to Bob Novak when Powell knew his own deputy, Richard Armitage, had spoken to Novak.
No secret to many of us that Powell has been less than satisfied with the Republican Party. But it looks as if the economy is now the major problem facing the new administration.
I think Joe the Plumber has more resonance than Colin Powell at this point in the election. Powell, who has no experience in economic issues and has never spoken out on them, simply doesn’t figure into those concerns.
