Tumor in Colorado newborn’s brain contained foot at AP/Yahoo and Tumour In Baby’s Brain Contained Body Parts And A Foot at Anorak.

Whoa!

Yes, it really happened.

A Colorado Springs baby was found to have a microscopic brain tumor on MRI after birth. Come time for removal, the pediatric neurosurgeon discovered an amazingly well formed anatomic structure of a foot, and the early formation of another foot, thigh, and hand.

“It looked like the breach delivery of a baby, coming out of the brain,” Grabb said. “To find a perfectly formed structure (like this) is extremely unique, unusual, borderline unheard of.”

Why did this happen? No one knows for sure. There are such tumors that can grow various types of tissue in the body, either the same or different from the tissue where the tumor is found. But to find such well formed structures is rather astounding.

The baby is recovering well from the surgery in October 2008, with usual follow up visits in progress. Head scar is healing well an the baby is thriving.

The articles do not mention which type of tumor was found. Best guess is a teratoma, which can be a benign or malignant growth, with various types of structures present.

Huliq.

Another explanation could be a fetus in fetu, this is a developmental abnormality that allows a fetal twin to begin formation within the other. Dr. Grabb told the newspaper that only sees teratoma cases once every few years, but nothing like a fully developed foot.
