It is clear from the videos that the police warned people to disburse before firing tear gas. As for students getting trapped in that stairwell, they were warned as well.
I am not defending the actions by the police. But they have a job to do and when it is impossible to tell those merely observing from those that were doing damage they have to take actions for the worst case scenario. It’s just the way law enforcement works. And if you were on the other side of the equation getting your property damaged you would likely understand why.
Some of these people intentionally provoked the police. Bad mistake. Actually very stupid.
None of these police actions would have been necessary if the protesters were only exercising their First Amendment rights. But they crossed a line and began destroying property, some of them actually taunting the police and in one recorded case, threatening them with a large mobile trash receptacle. And if you don’t think that can cause serious physical harm try running into one some time.
As someone that has experienced police brutality first hand, it isn’t easy for me to come to their defense. I’ve been roughed up and had guns pulled on me by police. But as an American citizen that believes in EVERYONE’S rights, I cannot help but support their efforts to protect the property of those citizens that in no way contributed to any abuse toward the protesters. These anarchists started this problem and they alone should receive the blame for the response enacted.
The definition of anarchy describes who these people are and their total disregard for the rule of law. Yet they hide behind the law when they are confronted and stopped.
1 a : absence of government b : a state of lawlessness or political disorder due to the absence of governmental authority c : a utopian society of individuals who enjoy complete freedom without government
2 a : absence or denial of any authority or established order b : absence of order
Perhaps this should be required course material in every college:
Pardon me if I don’t get all weepy eyed over some violent, window smashing, property destroying anarchist going to jail. I have my own problems to worry about. As should you.
I don’t know about surveillance. I would not want to see anything that goes on around here at night. Too visual in the brain and I don’t need help. LOL

Charming update: it seems students were locked out of their dorm rooms during the melee with police and could not get back in. Persons opening doors to let them back in were attacked and arrested by police.
