From chicagotribune.com: Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid apologized on Saturday for saying the race of Barack Obama – whom he described as a “light skinned” African-American “with no Negro dialect, unless he wanted to have one” – would help rather than hurt his eventual presidential bid.
Obama quickly accepted, saying “As far as I am concerned, the book is closed.” Reid, facing a tough re-election bid this year, spent the day telephoning civil rights leaders and fellow Democrats in hopes of mitigating the political damage.

The president needs Reid to get the health care plan rammed through (behind closed doors) before the State of the Union address. After that, Reid will lose his election and go deal blackjack. Obama doesn’t care then because he will have his health care plan in place and his pal, Dick Durbin, will probably become majority leader.

I guess this means the president is going to forgive Don Imus now. ABC’s Jake Tapper reminds us of this:

The notions that as young African-American women — who I hope will be athletes — that that somehow makes them less beautiful or less important. It was a degrading comment. Gosh, ya know. I read that thing the whole way through. These so-called ‘leaders’ are just putting on a show. Their marriages are a sham, the lie like a rug every single solitary time they move their lips, and goodness knows what it’s going to take to change all of this.
People just need to wake up, that’s all. This is basically a war against huge financial interests who pay big money to prop up these people’s appearances.
You know something, I’m optimistic. There’s something about all of this that is so silly that it just isn’t worth discussing. Maybe if we just stop paying attention to these people they will just go away.
I was talking with the HNIC yesterday during all of this stuff going on, and he remarked to me that he went to see Avatar. And how he really hopes that one day these actors and politicians can be replaced by digital images. I replied of course in my own inimitable style, That’s what they are already.
So I just say screw ‘em. Step away from the teevee and just let them eat themselves up from the inside. They want attention, and so why give it to them…?
