The first aftershocks of the day are being reported on twitter this morning. Misery.
Hundreds of thousands of people have died in Haiti’s earthquake, the prime minister told CNN Wednesday.Haitian authorities said the powerful quake destroyed most of the capital city of Port-au-Prince.
A top envoy called it a “major catastrophe.”

CCTV captures dog in USA sensing an earthquake before it hits. How many animals left their surroundings before the quake hit in Haiti?

How incredibly, incredibly sad. This country has suffered for so long and on so many fronts.
No one, no country should suffer like this.
Thank you for all your photos, and all your posts at UW.
January 13, 2010 at 5:02 am
You’re welcome. We can’t let this tragedy go unnoticed.
January 13, 2010 at 5:01 am
I just couldn’t help juxtaposing these photos, which by the way were a phenomenal effort on your part, to the pathetic photo of Harry Reid just below in your previous post…
Some people live for attention – others attend to the living…
January 13, 2010 at 5:05 am
Others attend to the living…so true. This will be a true testament to those who survive. 2 million people living in Port au Prince with no water, or other necessities. Last count 25 aftershocks. The infrastructure must be nonexistent. I fear a worst catastrophe than Katrina in terms of human loss of life. Thank you for the kind words NNIC.

I ask simply, where is the leadership of this country…? Our elected representatives should be rolling up their sleeves and making a bee line to Haiti to help these people with medical care, food, construction expertise, etc. …
Yet, meanwhile, the MSM hosts the “Rev.” Al Sharpton in a meaningless, fruitless, and otherwise futile and disgraceful ‘debate’ about the latest revelations of the “racism” and hypocrisy of the Democratic Party…
I ask, what in God’s name does all of this have to do with what is REALLY going on around us, e.g., the very troubling developments in our backyard, Haiti…? Where are our heroes today…? Do they even exist…?
January 13, 2010 at 5:26 am
The leaders will come forth without pomp and circumstance, because that is how they are. All we have to do is think of the Dutchman taking out Fruit of the Kaboom Boy. I saw Al and watched him work his tongue. What an idiot! He should be the first on a plane to help these people. He would benefit greatly from seeing true poverty. He might actually lose some weight as he would have to share food.
Reality always cleanses the palate except for these people.
January 13, 2010 at 5:40 am
It’s just sad.
January 13, 2010 at 5:42 am
Terribly sad DE and we have yet to see what the sun will rise on.
January 13, 2010 at 5:56 am
The photos are absolutely sobering. Prayers out to the people of Haiti.
January 13, 2010 at 1:08 pm
The suffering will only worsen with the coming of the next few days.
January 13, 2010 at 11:52 am
All Very sad. What surprised me was how quickly a statement cam out from obama promising help. Why don’t the American people get the same respect when something happens here?
January 13, 2010 at 1:07 pm
I don’t know. I do know that we, as a nation have cared for the world when disaster strikes. When Katrina hit, we had allies and foes offer help.

Where is POTUS? Where is he? Is he going to do a fly over of Port-au-Prince a la New Orleans and Bush? Or is he going to take a few days to figure out what to say – or better yet what his handlers want him to say on that godforsaken teleprompter – just like his fake response to the underwear bomber…
POTUS is a phony. His real name is Barry Soetoro, or some such thing – maybe even Barry Oreo, who knows for sure – but one thing is for sure, which is that his name means the Devil…
Now is it any wonder why ironically blacks are taking it on the chin while this impostor runs around living it up off the fat of the land and speaking unintelligible nothingnesses called lies…
January 14, 2010 at 12:39 am
POTUS doesn’t have a speech ready yet.
January 14, 2010 at 12:42 am
POTUS is a phony. If this were a Muslim nation, I think his strings would be pulled harder.

We the people do not need to wait for our ineffective and impotent “leaders”. We can help as individuals by joining with reputable organizations providing aid, like Restore Haiti: http://tinyurl.com/ycsllap
January 14, 2010 at 5:48 am
Yes. And this is a “real” yes, we can!
January 13, 2010 at 4:09 pm
Here is another good organization helping in Haiti:

January 13, 2010 at 5:36 pm
I seriously doubt the aid will get to those people.
I tried to help the Haitians, and I was left earn near penniless by the time I got back to the US. You can give & give & give & it would be like pissing in the wind.
You say “restore” Haiti. What would it be restored to? It has never had an infrastructure in the 1st place.

this is the plan. it is not restoration.

Thanks for the link. Was this the same area that was photographed in complete shambles? The building was a mess and most inside are presumed dead.

Looks like this maybe the building that was leveled.

The news indicated that the death toll is about 100,00. I think its higher because Haitians are packed like sardines in Port Au Prince. Im sure the landscape didnt help.
So when the earthquake hit, it was able to take a bunch of lives.
Many sleep outdoors (little or no air circulation in cement house).. and these are the ones who morelikey survived.
January 13, 2010 at 6:34 pm
there are 8 million haitians: estimates are that minimally 10,000 people have died, possibly 100,000.
as compared to our 300 million this would be as if 375,000 to 3.75 million Americans had died: the equivalent of 125 to 1250 9-11s.
