It wasn’t the first time O’Keefe entered a U.S. government building posing as someone he was not, as I found out researching my story in the upcoming issue of Wired magazine.
Late last year, O’Keefe and fellow activist Joe Basel went into the Detroit and Chicago offices of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) with a hidden camera. They pretended to be scam artists, asking employees there to participate in a complex kickback scheme involving federal incentives for first-time home buyers. In the excerpted footage shown to me by O’Keefe, the staffers seemed only to happy to comply.
The law says that the tax credit maxes out at $8,000 for an $80,000 home. On the tape, O’Keefe asked a staffer, “What if I bought a place for $50,000, but the seller and I agreed to write down $80,000 as the purchase price?”
“Flip it any way you want,” the staffer replied.
What if the place is worth much less — like only $6,000?
“Yup, you can do that.”
I wish I could provide more details — like the names of the staffers, or the exact dates of the recordings. But O’Keefe showed me the tapes just once, and quickly. O’Keefe did mention, however, that he was surprised he was able to avoid the federal buildings’ security systems.
A HUD spokesman said he was unaware of the tapes — or of any ongoing investigations into fraud at the department’s Chicago or Detroit offices. “First I’ve heard of it,” said HUD’s Jerry Brown.
So let’s summarize: just as in the stories about ACORN — for which the news just keeps getting worse — we have HUD officials turning a blind, indolent apparatchik’s eye to a proposal of blatant illegality involving a federally funded project: talk about “waste, fraud and abuse” –

Shaking my head in disgust….wondering who can you trust?

I know, I am disgusted. We need to put an end to this soon.

[...] less worry for our intrepid duo… and now, HUD may have plenty to worry about from another O’Keefe [...]

This kid, James O’Keefe, is a marvel and has real cajones in his intrepid quest to dig up and expose the truth with corruptocrats – sadly, the “real” journalists, those making MILLIONS a year like Katie Couric, ignore these legitimate stories to instead watch and broadcast a colonoscopy.
This HUD sting is just the beginning.
Apparently, Andrew Breitbart has a lot of other videos under wraps from O’Keefe, which he said he would release just prior to the November elections if AG Holder didn’t do his job and conduct a federal investigation into ACORN. Well, as of today, Judicial Watch just announced that the DOJ investigation has suddenly been stopped… urgggh.
The ACORN lawsuit in Maryland has been dismissed – I’m waiting for the other shoe to drop in the Louisiana debacle. Although, if it fares well for O’Keefe, you won’t hear about it on any of Dear Leader news stations.
O’Keefe may/should get a Pulitizer Prize someday… but only if a Republican is in office. Otherwise, he’ll be the ongoing target of lies and vicious smears (see all the stories Patterico has been uncovering about leftist fabrications on O’Keefe).

O’Keefe is going to get something out of this. He is doing the right thing. I was concerned over the New Orleans arrest, but the detail say that there is far more than meets the eye. I figured that since it was the Ratke home territory, O’Keefe would pay dearly. This HUD thing is just the beginning.
Not to worry, that is what the internet is for. Let’s face it, few are actually monitoring the news via the established MSM if they want to search for the truth. Katie will be gone soon. I am so disappointed in her work.
March 12, 2010 at 5:58 pm
Yeah the Lamestream media lied and lied and lied about that Nawlins arrest.
March 11, 2010 at 6:35 pm
O’Keefe does not have to pretend to be a scam artist.
He did not enter ACORN offices dressed as a pimp; O’Keefe, Hannah Giles, and even that lying pos Breitbart has now admitted this. Breitbart will not show the unedited footage. How much else is the result of outright lies and extreme editing?
Unless O’Keefe shows all of the footage at HUD, please do not suggest this garbage in any way resembles journalism.
March 11, 2010 at 7:06 pm
Sorry Nom, I disagree with you on HUD. I have witnessed first hand falsehoods perpetrated by our local HUD. Every few years there is a bust and then it goes away.
I think O’Keefe has done a very good job considering he is a kid and didn’t have money to do any of this in the beginning. Breitbart cannot reveal all of the footage as he has been named in the lawsuit by ACORN. I disagree about Breitbart. Let the sun shine in and disinfect.
JMO, but there is a lot of garbage associated with ACORN and Project Vote. Personally, ACORN cannot die soon enough. I heard today, some court has ruled that keeping ACORN’s paws out of the taxpayer’s pockets was unconstitutional. Sorry, I just can’t tell you more, one of my beautiful cats died today and I am not thinking very clearly.

I am very sorry to hear about your kitty. There is nothing worse than losing a pet.
I thought I had lost one of mine as well, but he reappeared at last, very terrified. I think my neighbor tried to harm him.
I do not say I think HUD or ACORN (or any other group, necessarily) is ethical: I have said: If O’Keefe and Breitbart are involved, it is yellow journalism.
They LIED. They pretended he went in dressed as a pimp, and he did not.
Fool me once, Shame on you…
HUD has been involved in ethical scandals for many years, there was that whole mess under Reagan back when I was in high school.

I am so happy your kitty came home Nom. I hope nothing happened to your cat. Animals should not be harmed. There is no reason to hurt a cat. I am terribly saddened by losing this kitty. She was the sweetist cat. She is now resting with the others.
HUD rhymes with MUD. Dirty. I’m not sure about the dress Nom, are you speaking of the hairy coat and funky hat? I have known pimps that don’t dress like clowns, so the videos are a bit comical.
March 12, 2010 at 8:06 am
they are edited to insinuate that O’Keefe went in dressed as a pimp: he did not. On tv both O’Keefe and Giles did not correct interviewers and allowed statements that O’Keefe was wearing that absurd pimp getup inside ACORN offices to stand.
They have all admitted this now.
frankly with all the voiceover on the videos and the extreme editing, I do not think anyone can say the substance of the interactions with O’Keefe, Giles, and the ACORN workers with any surety.
I have no love for ACORN and I can believe that some of their offices and employees are engaged in criminal activities.
However, if the Breitbart-hired O’Keefe and Giles footage was so incriminating they would not have needed to edit it to the extent that they were LYING.
That goes beyond anything I will accept. I will not be lied to and shrug it off and pretend that nothing has happened because the LIARS and I have perhaps a common foe.

there is a photo gallery at: http://www.photolucida.org/cm_winners.php?aID=1338&CMYear=2009&event_id=10
Mary Shannon Johnstone took photos of cat and kitten euthanasia in NC.
this is what I’m up against. very sad; people ought to make themselves go look: maybe then they would feel compelled to do more.
March 12, 2010 at 9:33 am
I can’t look right now Nom. It’s just too heartbreaking. That cat that I lost was a feral kitten. She was so tame and sweet. She would never go near another human, just me.
March 12, 2010 at 3:37 pm
oh McNorman, I do not mean you, nor anyone else in particular; I know that you do far more than your share of rescuing the most disenfranchised of this world’s creatures.
I love ferals more than anything, they are so special.
March 12, 2010 at 3:41 pm
I know Nom. I wish people would understand. I love ferals as well. It breaks my heart to know that had I not rescued her, she would have succumbed to a horrible death.
