Via Business Insider:
Want some idea of how a nuke can plug a well? A reader sent us this video of how the USSR plugged a gas well that was burning and leaking out of control. When it finally comes to this (maybe sometime in September?) we look forward to the disclaimer on the BP announcement: this has never been tried at a depth of 5,000 feet below sea level.

SocalAnnie raised a good question over at freedom fairy’s blog about using a nuclear weapon on the gulf well. She asked what the implications are as far as the nuclear bomb setting off a tsunami?
From watching this video you can see the blast had quite an impact when it exploded. I too wonder if such a blast might set off a tsunami??

I don’t know Somebody, but I have been wondering why not use an explosive? I have a feeling that it has to do with not destroying that gusher completely. I would prefer that they shut it down completely instead of thinking about how they are going to recover costs. It’s always about the bottom line.

This could be done with a conventional “BunkerBuster” bomb. All that needs to happen is to break the well sleeve casing below the Gulf floor.

EXACTLY deadenders! It doesn’t have to be an all out industral strength nuke. BUT if they blow the well old British Petroleum will lose their well and oh my there goes all that money.
Its always greed. These people make me sick.

It’s very sick. It makes my stomach turn. There is no end to this greed.

Good idea!
Otherwise the BP will spoil all the coast

I don’t know about that…I’m a little worried about whether this well is just the tip of a volcano gushing oil well. BP has already wrecked the coast. Interesting that Russia has not had problems from nuclear shut downs.
