Stuart resident Herbert Johnson, 92, has been ordered to stay out of Martin County public libraries after waging an amorous campaign toward female employees.
His offensive included, for one librarian in particular, a letter left on the front desk “containing sexually explicit language stating what (he) wanted to do to” her.

I suppose he believes he has nothing to lose. Yes, Jim manners would do him a world of good. I have a friend 95 this year who loves to dance. He will never miss any appointment that conflicts with ballroom dance class. The ladies love him to death. He is quite the gentleman I am told. Unfortunately, he has been a widower for over 30 years. All he wants is to be able to listen to music and dance.

sexual harassment is not amusing under any circumstance and should be regarded as threatening in precisely the same way as if delivered by a younger man. while a 90 year old is unlikely to be able to overpower a younger healthy woman without a weapon, this does not preclude attacks on elderly or infirm women or children or attacks aided with the threat of a weapon. and for anyone clueless enough to think old women are not victims of rape, I had as a neighbor once when I lived in a triplex apartment a 92 year old woman who was raped during a home invasion.

maybe, but he didn’t have any problem composing numerous letters of clear intent. half of people 85 & up show some signs of mental deterioration– but half don’t. I’m betting he is in the half that does not.
I was extremely offended by the linked article’s not-funny impression that he was just some lovesick harmless old crank instead of a threatening old pervert.

When you start to go off the deep end, it’s a slow process. I have a feeling that he has disease. The man is from a different era…this is very wrong behavior for someone who is this old. I bet money on mental deterioration.

what you say is possible, but somehow I don’t find myself agreeing.
he staked out libraries where probably virtually the entire staff was comprised of women: no competition & no one likely to punch him out. this seems calculated behavior to me.
he left letters and gifts– at a guess perhaps in increasing amounts/ suggestiveness? as the earlier ones went without the response he wanted.
when he didn’t get the first woman to agree to have sex with him, he moved on to the next woman he found attractive.
many men believe women respond favorably to overt crude suggestions. these clowns come in all ages: I’ve met them.
At 92 the likelihood of him finding readily a woman who wants to have sex with him is small. I’m betting he is simply opting for what he perceives is the modern approach.

at 92 he might well have outlived close family members and friends who could attest as to his normal behaviour. you are right: not good.
