An Arizona legislative committee on Tuesday narrowly approved a sweeping bill that would target illegal immigrants in public housing, public benefits and the workplace.
The Senate committee also approved a bill that would deny automatic citizenship to the children of illegal immigrants, a measure designed to set up a possible U.S. Supreme Court case on the issue.
Republican state Sen. Russell Pearce, who authored Arizona’s controversial illegal immigration law last year that touched off a nationwide debate on whether states can enforce federal immigration laws, sponsored the latest measure.
“If you’re in the country illegally, you don’t have a right to public benefits, period,” he said.

Saudi king offers benefits as he returns from treatment.
Hey peasants, now that the Middle East is toasting we have good news.
Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah has announced increased benefits for his citizens, as he returned after months abroad getting medical treatment.
There will be extra funds for housing, studying abroad and social security, according to state television.
King Abdullah has been away from the country for three months, during which time mass protests have changed the political landscape of the Middle East.

He did make a speech today, in Ohio, at a “Winning the Future Forum on Small Business”. Winning the future is the president’s new slogan. Boosting small business is essential to strengthening the American recovery.
But winning the future in the Middle East and north Africa matters too. This was a ready-made opportunity to make brief remarks that would have not just urged restraint on the Libyan dictator but urged him, if not to step aside, then recognise the forces for change in his country.

There’s been virtually no reliable information coming out of Tripoli, but a source close to the Gaddafi regime I did manage to get hold of told me the already terrible situation in Libya will get much worse. Among other things, Gaddafi has ordered security services to start sabotaging oil facilities. They will start by blowing up several oil pipelines, cutting off flow to Mediterranean ports. The sabotage, according to the insider, is meant to serve as a message to Libya’s rebellious tribes: It’s either me or chaos.

Fidel Castro: US ready to order Libya invasion.
Former Cuban leader Fidel Castro says the US has no interest in seeing peace in Libya but is solely concerned with the country’s oil reserves.
Mr Castro, in a column published in state media, said it was too early to evaluate what was happening in Libya.
But, he said, it was clear the US would not hesitate to order Nato to invade.
