BP Loses Laptop Containing Thousands of Oil Spill Victims’ Personal Information.
As if BP’s reputation on the Gulf Coast couldn’t get any worse, the company is now scrambling to address the disappearance of a laptop containing thousands of names of victims from the last year’s massive oil spill.
The company announced Tuesday that an employee lost the laptop, containing 13,000 names and the personal information of individuals who made claims related to the Deepwater Horizon accident last April.
The password-protected laptop contained an expansive list that contained Social Security numbers, phone numbers and address of the individuals.

I was reading in the WSJ that BP had been paying out millions of $$ in settlements for the deaths from the oil platform. I also remember reading somewhere that the claims had to be filed by a certain date in order to be processed or considered for settlement.
If all these names and identities are “lost” will that then disqualify people from being able to settle/collect, etc?

I have been using portable computers since the Compaq Luggables (Just 30 lbs!) of the 80′s. I had them on the Metro, on buses, on the Marc trains, and by car around the beltway and through several states. I have never lost one. I still have my original notebook computer. A Zeos. Still works.
How is it that all these people (IRS, Veteran’s …..BP) manage to loose them ?? And why is the information – at the very large corporations/departments/organizations even kept on a notebook??
And yes, no one ever seems to back up and secure the information.
And no one (say those people who are supposed to journalists) never say – wait a minute – this is just bull.
