Social Security pays millions in benefits to deceased – Sep. 7, 2011.
The Social Security inspector general estimates that the agency has made $40.3 million in erroneous payments to deceased beneficiaries — even though the administration had already recorded their deaths in its records. The estimate is based on a sample tested during its most recent audit in January 2008, the watchdog agency said.

Nice work if you can get it…..stupidity abounds in our government. Sometimes they get it right. Without even notifying them, they cut off my Dad’s benefits immediately when he passed. How did they find out? It shows you there are ways to make sure the deceased do not get further benefits.

True story – my mom received SS checks for about a year after she died. I tried a number of times to stop them but they just kept coming. I started using them for bookmarks. The feds tried to prosecute me for “stealing/” Huh?? None of the checks were cashed.
The Secret Service (in charge of these things because it’s a treasury department thing) told me that the department is so screwed up they have no idea how much money they have or don’t have. It even took them an additional 4 months to get the checks to stop coming.
After SIX YEARS they finally left me alone. My attorney felt so sorry for me he gave me back my money.

Good gawd Adrienne. That is insane. Bookmarks? I can’t believe the amount of ineptitude that occurs. I’ve heard many people say that they try to tell the government to stop and it’s as if they are speaking to the wall. Astounding.

This may not be the right thread to post this. Just now I received email that according to the Tribune:
Goldman Sachs to offer $20M in loans to Chicago businesses
Wall Street giant Goldman Sachs is funneling $20 million in loans to Chicago’s small businesses as part of a broader program to provide funding, training and support services to entrepreneurs, Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced Tuesday.

Now, if this doesn’t lead one to surmise the obama administration had close ties to Goldman Sachs, I don’t know what does.
