There is no one at the helm at OWS. Media portrayals and testimonials by operatives aside: the legitimate protesters, however clueless, have created and maintained a leaderless populist movement.
This vast left wing conspiracy meme of the wingers is getting ridiculous. There is no left wing in politics: leftists were systematically jailed and deported in the early 20s and there has never been a ghost of a reemergence of leftwing parties. The left wing exists only as an ideology. There are no leftwing politicians: the closest out there is center, and I mean actual center, not a winger’s idea of center, which is still very far right.
There’s a persistent misunderstanding for many, even those who like watching & reading about politics, as to what comprises leftism.
Leftism is political ideology or practice derived from the philosophy of the socialists, the communists, the anarchists, and the left wing authoritarians*, and their various subgroups (democratic socialists, Marxists, Trotskyites, Leninists, anarcho-communists, anarcho-syndicalists, anarcho-capitalists, etc). What comprises these philosophies is not negotiable because it is codified in the writings of preeminent leftist philosophers.
Some of the most common features of leftist philosophy include: worker control of the means of production, end of rentier class (see ‘class collaboration’), concept of civil society, concept of inherent rights, egalitarianism between classes, egalitarianism between genders; generally, a respect for the environment, and promotion of individual autonomy as long as it does not infringe on the rights of others.
There is a negative form of leftism: leftwing authoritarianism, that posits a strong centralized government with the authority to compel people to obey its dictates. One might be thinking, that sounds like the BHO administration! Not so fast. Even leftwing authoritarianism requires for example that people all be housed, that people all be fed. My Russian professor, an older man from the soviet era, looked back with great nostalgia for his life in Russia: his worker group had its own dacha where everyone was entitled to a paid vacation of one month a year (they had other holidays as well); the cost of his food was subsidized, his housing was free, his healthcare was free, his phd education was free. Luxury was short, but abject poverty didn’t exist. The Obama administration does not give out free healthcare. Instead it mandates one buy insurance that has such a high deductible it will be unusable by the poor and even the approaching-poor. His administration does not subsidize food costs, it gives bailouts to banksterists who skyrocket our food prices by commodities speculation. Education is at present subsidized in the US but less so under Obama than previous recent presidents including Bush2. Of particular note is the withdrawal of funds for Pell grants that are used by less affluent citizens. As for free housing, ever heard of foreclosure?
The form of leftism determines the belief in the use of force and the degree of appropriate force: most anarchists are pacifists against all wars for any purpose, most socialists and communists would accept war in self defense, left wing authoritarians might condone even preemptive war like neoliberals and fascists.
What leftism often includes, especially various forms of anarchism: open borders or at least nonrestrictive immigration.
What leftism does NOT include: fascism, capitalism (except anarcho-capitalism), inequality of classes or genders, lack of civil society, lack of inherent rights.
Understand: this is the politics of leftism on paper. What may be called a communist or socialist country, or even democratic or capitalist country, by the media can have very little in common with its purported philosophy. Eg, Communist China is not communist but authoritarian, and not even that leftwing nowadays, and it most certainly does not promote egalitarianism between genders.
The Obama administration is a fascist entity, and fascism is a rightwing ideology. Fascism consists of corporate control of the government, privatization of services, lack of egalitarianism between classes, no civil society or inherent rights.
You might try reading the works of or (reputable) biographies concerning Karl Marx, Lenin, Trotsky, Mikhail Bakunin, Kropotkin, George Orwell, Leo Tolstoy, Jean Jaurès, James Shaver Woodsworth, James Guillaume, William Allen, Eugene Debs, John L. Lewis, Helen Keller, John Bartram, Thoreau, Upton Sinclair, Edward Bellamy, Elise Boulding, Emma Goldman, Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, A. Philip Randolph, Errico Malatesta, Emmeline & Richard Pankhurst, Robert Owen, Eric Baker (founded Amnesty Intl), Bertold Brecht, Ernst Bloch, Wendell Berry, all of whom were or are lefties.
