Oh oh. Sounds like someone is angry and is willing to take on Goliath.
Glenn Greenwald to Drop a Bigger Bombshell?
Is Glenn Greenwald, the journalist who broke the Edward Snowden/NSA story, about to drop a major bombshell that will make his previous story look like child’s play? That’s the online buzz about the Guardian journalist after his partner, David Miranda, was detained for nine hours at London’s Heathrow Airport. Speculation over documents Miranda may have had in his possession continues to grow as new details emerge about possible confiscation of information by the British government. Some are saying Greenwald is preparing to drop an even bigger bombshell than his previous stories have delivered. What’s more, the Washington Post reports, the United States knew about Britain’s plan to detain Miranda, a move Greenwald has termed “a failed attempt at intimidation.”
Miranda had been staying with documentary filmmaker Laura Poitras, who filmed Snowden talking about the NSA’s spy program. Greenwald revealed that his partner was subjected to intense questioning during the incident, saying, “David was asked mostly about the work Laura Poitras, the Guardian and I were doing on NSA stories, as well as extensive information about me and Laura. He was also asked about Brazil, the political situation in Brazil, and his friends and family.” Greenwald also said Miranda was asked about “what stories we were working on at the moment.”
Josh Earnest, a White House spokesman, was blasé about the United States’ previous knowledge of the detainment, saying “This was a decision that was made by the British government without the involvement and not at the request of the United States government. It’s as simple as that.”
Numerous politicians in Britain have since questioned the motive for Miranda’s detainment, especially in light of the fact that most people detained under Schedule 7 of Britain’s Terrorism Act 2000, the law under which Miranda was detained, are questioned for an hour or less.
The Guardian staff has reported that not only have they been under pressure from police in Britain to turn over information relating to the Snowden case, they’ve also had several hard drives destroyed by authorities.
Now, many on social networks are questioning why the heat has been turned up so high on Greenwald, and some are suggesting that Miranda may have been carrying documents related to a major bombshell that could bring the United States to its knees. One commenter under a news story about the detainment said:
Given what we know so far, the pursuit of Snowden and Greenwald has reached very unusual levels. These kinds of incidents don’t seem worth the political embarrassment and they help to confirm Snowden/Greenwald’s accusations.
It must be the case that Snowden/Greenwald are holding back a huge bombshell that they intend to release. Something so big that it will rock our political system. The government knows this and it is forcing their hand to do whatever they can to prevent the release, because no matter what embarrassments occur it would be nothing compared to the release.
Some commenters are calling for the dismantling of the NSA, with one observer stating:
NSA has shown itself to be a despot whose only aim is self-preservation and destruction of all opposition. Let us destroy NSA instead; it has to go if we are to get our freedoms back.
Whether or not Glenn Greenwald will drop a bigger, major bombshell in the upcoming days or weeks remains to be seen, but the pressure on the journalist is getting very intense. This leads many to question what else he knows and what the authorities are so very afraid of.
