I heard this on the radio as I was driving home.   Seems to be history repeating itself.  What do you think?

Edward Gibbon noted five symptoms that characterized the decline of Rome.

A mounting love of show and luxury.

A widening gap between the very rich and the very poor.

An obsession with sex.

Freakishness in the arts, masquerading as originality, and enthusiasms pretending to be creativity.

An increased desire to live off the state.

We have failed to learn from history.

Edward Gibbon (8 May 1737[1] – 16 January 1794)[2] was an English historian and Member of Parliament. His most important work, The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire (streaming ebook download), was published in six volumes between 1776 and 1788. The Decline and Fall is known for the quality and irony of its prose, its use of primary sources, and its open criticism of organized religion.[3]
